I read Swing Time by Zadie Smith on

Review

This novel took me a few weeks to finish: despite its short chapters, the switching back and forth between time periods and the subtlety of the plot made it hard to plow through big sections.

But, really, Zadie Smith could write a novel about nothing and I think I’d enjoy it. Her writing just fantastic. Just beautiful sentences, like “The weather in the flat changed.” And the meandering plot leads up to a sort of anti-culmination that had so much emotional power.

It’s not a romp, it’s a meditative, thoughtful, meandering story, a very good one. Can’t wait to read more from Smith - maybe White Teeth is next.
